Dragon Den’s Event

I’ve been receiving Small Business BC’s email newsletter for a few years now, and jumped at the chance to see Jim Treliving live at a free event at the new W 2 building.

The event was packed with an audience of over 300 people in the very high tech and modern auditorium.  The moderator of the night was the producer of Dragon’s Den. She gave a very encouraging welcome speech to small business owners everywhere and encouraging their entrepreneur spirit.  They showed some episodes of the Dragon’s Den so the audience got familiar with the “Dragons”.  Then Jim was introduced with avid applause from the audience.

The moderator facilitated the rest of the evening in a Q&A style with Jim Treliving, who, after being a member of the RCMP, franchised Boston Pizza and made it what it is today. Jim was a total solid guy. He talked about how he got his first $10,000 from his dad and what an ordeal he went through to get it.

The majority of the evening was spent talking about the process of how to apply and audition for the Dragon’s Den. Members from two successful businesses went on stage and talked about their preparation and what helped them get through. We watched their episodes, and followed with a question period.

I really enjoyed the event.  It was Canadian business in action, even though the whole thing was a marketing ploy and a two hour commercial.  It was really neat to hear from two Dragons, and see them speak and interact live off the cuff.  I appreciated their realness and talking frankly about finding distribution, importance of marketing, franchising into the USA, etc…
