Encounter with a Birdie

A friend of mine is a badminton nut and invited me to play awhile back. Being somewhat athletic, I thought it’d be a breeze to jump right in.  I took out my $10 badminton rackets I bought from Chinatown, brought out my best runners and yoga gear and was ready for battle!
After two hours of running, jumping, slamming, and generally sweating like a pig, I felt like a pathetic loser. First my friend was nice enough to educate me that my rackets will hurt my wrist. Instead of help my game they were hurting it as they’re heavy. He informed me that there are a variety of  rackets for different purposes.  Some are for offense, some are for defense, and some are for a more balanced approach.  His best racket went upwards of $300!
When we started playing my friend and his crew’s agility, speed, responses, and skills were dazzling and impressive to see.  Their birdie went to where they had intended with accuracy and direction, while my birdie was slow and bell curved.
After this cardio madness, my friend asked me if I was a tennis player. I proudly replied yes, only to have him smirk at me. He taught me that the speed and accuracy of badminton is in the flick of the wrist, not in the power of the arm extension from the slam motion. It was embarrassing to realize that I’ve been playing Badminton wrong ALL these years, and only learned it now.
I really appreciated my friend’s kind instructions and encouragement, and felt very excited about this sport!  It cost between $7-10 for 2-3 hours.  It’s very social, fun and relaxing sport that anyone with a pair of white bottom runners can play.
I for one will be sure play more often, and get better with the wrist flicking!

Eat Right For Your Type by Peter J.D’Adamo

This fascinating book tells the history of human genealogy via blood type.
·       O type: Oldest of the blood type, originated in 400,000 B.C. It is at the top of the food chain, has an extremely strong and stubborn immune system. It is the blood type of hunters and gatherers, originating from Africa. However due to population and territorial fighting, has moved out to Europe and Asia and other parts of the globe.  This type of people enjoy high impact exercise and animal proteins. They tend to be strong, independent, leaders with very aggressive digestive track. The best reducer of stress is exercise, and need an effective metabolism to maintain healthy body and energy level. They really love to eat meats, but are not a big fan of dairy.  Avoid beans if you want to lose weight.  Eat more seafood, seaweed, spinach and cauliflower to help with metabolism to lose weight.  Try aerobics, running, swimming, biking, or basketball for exercise.
·       Type A: Originating from 250,000-150,000 B.C. in Asia or Middle East. Agriculture and farming has led to a huge change in their diet, and better immune than type O against viruses. This blood type now mostly residing in Western Europe like Turkey, Spain, Mediterranean area.  These people should avoid processed foods, and stick to fresh, natural, organic food.  Type A tend to develop heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, but they are stable, collaborative, and systematic. Type A people will feel lethargic after eating meat, and due to the lack of stomach digestive enzyme, the meat becomes fat.  Try to cook with vegetable oil, eat more beans, veggies, and pineapple to lose weight. Tai-chi, Yoga, Kung-fu, Golf, walking, swimming, stretching are all great exercises for you.  Type A people display collaboration, and adaptability, self control and law abiding as characteristics.  Not suitable in high pressure, high stress leadership roles.
·       Type B: Originating 100,000-150,000 B.C. From the Himalayan mountains around Pakistan and India. It first appeared among Indian and Mongolian people, as the Mongolians spread across Asia they split into a farming lifestyle, and a nomadic lifestyle. Type B are found currently in India, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, China, with some in Germany and Austria. There are very high concentrations of type B in Jewish populations around the world.  This is the best type of blood type to handle stress and change.  Not suitable for extremely competitive sport like squash, soccer or basketball, but individual bicycle traveling, non competitive martial arts, yoga,  tennis, and group walking. These people don’t like challenges or confrontation, so are more easily able to get along with all types of people, they’re also more empathic.  There are 9% of the American population that is type B, but 30-40% of millionaires  are type B.  They are more flexible and creative people.
·       Type AB: very rare, less than 5% of the population and the newest blood type.  Originated 10-12 centuries ago.  This type has the best immune system, so they don’t really develop allergies, or arthritis.  Complicated and unstable.  If you have breast cancer in your family’s medical history, try to add snail to your diet to avoid getting it yourself.  Avoid diary foods, eat more seafood, and fruits.  Tai-chi and Yoga are both great for type AB.  Personality wise, they’re not very detail oriented, nor results oriented, but welcoming and encompassing, hence a lot of counselor and therapists are AB type
Anthropologists believe that blood type is a much closer identifier of genealogy than race.  Reason being that people of the same blood type can exchange organs, and blood.  We could all be brothers and sisters through blood, this is an evolutionary revolution. Your blood type is a blueprint for life.

Lady Gaga’s After Party @ Canvas Lounge

On Aug 23, after two hours spent with friends, my vehicle showed up at a quarter to midnight to Canvas Lounge. Fashionably late to join the festivities of the Lady Gaga after party and what a party! It felt like Halloween had come early, as people spent money and put serious thought into their personas, outfits and their make up. I played TV host for Novus TV’s City Light’s program and interviewed many of the fabulous party goers at this party, and truly learned something about the charm of Lady Gaga.
People are inspired by her daring, ability to be a "FREAK" (in Lady Gaga's words, not mine) and willingness to experiment.  I wonder if it is the result of our consumer society’s mediocre packaged lifestyle.  Kids are no longer split into demographics as simple as “Skaters”, “Nerds”, “Jocks”, “Preppies” with their specific consumer products, dress code and radio station!
Kids today want to be different instead of fitting in, and with our more embracing and welcoming culture it has never been easier. A key component of this revolution is through the internet and social media, allowing these “freaks” a way to connect with other like-minded individuals. One of the great things about this revolution is it allows one to truly be creative, allowing them create a persona as unique as they are.  I welcome this change, and is excited by the turn towards diversity!  I can’t wait to see how this new wave will affect our cultural content, music, fashion and other expressions.

VCC’s 23rd Fiat Mode Fashion Show

On Sept 30th, hundreds of Vancouver’s fashionistas gathered for a very chic fashion showcase for the 21 graduates from the Vancouver Community College’s 2 year program.  It was a true eye opener, we saw very romantic wedding dresses by Minnie Tsz-Ying Chau, Asian influenced rich colorful silks and velvet dresses with dramatic low back scoops with big ribbon knots by Di Fei Zhao. There was also a hugely popular men's designer Blake Hyland who put out grungy modern day caveman outfit with metal belts, leather, fur, felt and some other unidentifiable material.

What was really striking was that men’s loafers and wedge boots were paired with many of the outfits, from very feminine siluette flowing dresses, to the more military inspired cargo outfits.  One thing is for sure, Vancouver is not short of creativity and imagination when it comes to fashion design, or big knit scarves that seem to go above just any design to add the cool factor.
My favourite designers were Jennifer Gagne for her colorful cute french interpretation, Kiyo Sagiya for her clean lines and fine tailoring.  Some of the older ladies really showcased their range and fashion sophistication such as Martha Ines Piedrahita bold and strong color usage and pattern mixing, while Reyhaneh Sadat Mansouri impressed with innovation in her cut focused on modernity and class.  Some designers really pushed their boundaries like Monica Fraser who used peacock's feather as her inspiration, or Hsuan-Ching Hung for her creative use of gun metal leather in body hugging evening gown embody chic and rock & roll attitude.  Check out the picture, and do come out to their show next year and support this amazing program!  I know was itching to buy some of the designs I saw.
