One of the perks of being on the Canadian Public Relations Society’s 2009 conference steering committee is professional development and support. Our fearless leader John Kageorge was generous enough to invite Sunny Wong from Kawazaki Wong Group to give a speech based on his special events experience. Sunny was one of the key architects of Dragon Boat Festival, Leo Awards, 30 days of Sustainability and 1’st nights for the year 2000 at Science World!
He was eloquent and business-like. You can just sense how big his heart is, something to compliment his sharp mind . I liked him right away. Here are his words of wisdom:
1. Be the first to do something that no one else is doing!
2. Don’t be afraid to do the best, get the best keynote speaker, supplier entertainer etc.
3. Conference should be mission based, not theme based. That’s how you can keep volunteer motivation throughout, because they’re contributing to something meaningful.
4. Add elements of surprise and be spontaneous, even if it’s planned, because that’s what they’ll remember. Ex: people bid $5000 for the President of a non-profit to give a speech, 3 people bid $5000, so they raised $15,000 for a 5 minutes speech and everyone’s happy.
5. Magic, sense, feeling, energy, and décor is all created and anchored through emotional connection.
Eugen Klein is a very clever commercial realtor. He’s also my first client, and a dear friend. I recently went for lunch with him and the two of us caught up (“catch up” sounds like ketchup) It seems I’ve been catching up with a lot of people, and we usually see each other once a year, but the strength of our relationship does not diminish at all.
I was telling him that I need to learn more about conversion and closing the deals because I talk to a lot of potential clients but I’m not closing in on too many of them. He asked for my value proposition, but I didn’t understand what he was asking me, so he gave me an example. When he is approached by a potential client, he qualifies them to see if they have the budget and are ready to work with him with the necessary paper work. He then goes on to demonstrate his value by providing an assessment on the property of his clients’ behalf to evaluate if it’s a good buy or not. If the client purchases the building, then that fee is included in his final charge. He also has an extensive network of buyers, and sellers, 4 employees full time, and he still makes 80 outgoing calls a day.
I asked him about the recent boom in the incoming traffic I’ve been receiving and how I should deal with the feast or famine nature of my business. He asks what I do after each event. I tell him my process of follow up and thank yous, and how I take care of my clients. He proceeded to tell me that I should have next year’s event contracts signed and sealed. I rebutted and said that I don’t know the scale of their next event, and what their needs are. I also said that the contract and quote for my service is specific to each event. Eugen emphasizes that I should get a deposit and secure their commitment.
He says there are only three things a potential client considers:
1. Pricing (can I afford this company’s products/services)
2. Trust (do I trust this person to deliver on his/her promises of product / services)
3. Experience (will I enjoy working this supplier)
Eugen made me realize that value statements is how you can differentiate yourself from your competitors, Ultimately, he said you shouldn’t be afraid to charge more, because you are different and that is what gives you value from the point of view of potential clients.
I went to my mastermind group this Wednesday from 7-9pm, and we worked on me this time. They let me gabber on about my life, and we were trying to find out what is blocking me from success and how they can all help. We all came to the realization that I have a great track record in my previous jobs as I became the top sales person for whatever products/services. But when it comes to my own company, I have a real issue with sales. I feel like I’m selling myself, and it makes me extremely uncomfortable. My mastermind group helped me separate my own identity with Gracious Host Events and Social Butterfly Club.
July 31st, 2008 at Celebrities was “Envy My Music”, the party of all parties to kick off Pride Weekend. As a friend of Jens, I knew how much work he’s put into producing this extravaganza, so I brought 3 friends to check it out.
We’re not disappointed to say the least. We walked into a totally decorated indoor magical forest, complete with a water fall, giant trees, a sky covered in flowers, and 12-15 goth and lingerie clad go go dancers. All the go go dancers had very dramatic make up and costumes, all the way from rainbow colored feature lashes to bondage wear metal chains around the chest. It seems hot bodies were the best accessories.
Q 1’s LED and laser lights filled the room with excitement from multicolor lights to green lasers mixed with DJ Skilla’s crazy tunes. Some of the music was hit and miss, but for the majority of the night, it was very danceable electronica blended with Annie Lennox, 90’s pop, 70’s Disco and everything in between. There were even some hip-hop heavy beats and house.
Besides the go go dancers and celebrities staff being all clad in makeup, adding to the mix were two girls in black lingerie swinging on 2 giant circles from Vancouver Cirquis. I really loved the moment when all the lights went down, and all the go go dancers turned on their high voltage flash lights and did the robot dance, with flashes going every which direction. That was definitely an experience, and dare I say it was the best party I’ve ever attended in Vancouver…. I’ve been to quite a few parties lately, and most makes me yawn, but this was well executed and beautifully produced. Only odd thing was that Tiger beer was the only beer for sale! For 3 hours, floats after floats with 8000 participates marched down Denman Street and towards Beach Avenue. Boy was it a huge celebration. I’m glad to not only see all the major local authorities like police, fireman and ambulances, but also local politicians and TV personalities. I woke up late at around 1pm and hurried out down towards Beach Ave and Nicola, but luckily I still caught most of the Pride Parade. I got soaked when the fire truck came by and a little boy sprayed everyone with the hose, but the hot sun dried the clothes quite quickly…. Then I got wet again, when Fred Lee from CBC came by with his water gun! All in great fun. I love the parade this year, there was a lot of diversity, with the variety of organizations involved from corporate, non profit, schools, municipalities etc…. to the different ethnic groups proudly wearing their heritage on display.
There were a lot of feather boas, short shorts, and rainbow colored balloons. Party Bazaar must have made a killing! My friend Andre and I both noticed that the boy shorts are getting skimpier than ever…. It seem to be just elastic around the waist, with a pouch. Thank god most of the community are health freaks and have wicked bodies.
I got a mandaila henna around my belly button after the parade on the fair’s ground from a talented East Indian lady name Rita Khimani, you can get your exotic henna from her at 604 291-0789 or email: exotic.henna@gmail.com
It was the perfect day, with the heat in our face, breeze blowing in our ears, and sun’s rays shimmering off of the water. I run into a few friends lining up at the taco stand, then later bumped into Jens, Diana Hambrook and Van Eyk at the Red Bull dance station. We all danced to this German DJ, and two very hot men wearing nothing but short shorts and angel wings. Apparently, this year’s celebration has over 100,000 people in attendance. I really love that, because when Christians say love thy neighbour, they didn’t mean gay and lesbians. But the pride parade is about celebration our differences and individuality, and see how big of a phenomenon that is! This is a display of the forward thinking, and open-mindedness of Vancouver.
If you want to see what all the hooter and holler is about, the Queer Film Festival is Aug 14-24th, find your movie listings at www.queerfilmfestival.com For next year’s pride parade, check out www.vancouverpride.ca
